Don't be a Gashole.
Preventing Emissions Through Awareness
SF6 gas, also referred to as sulfur hexafluoride, is a man-made gas with a global warming potential 22,800 times higher than CO2. Greenhouse gases contribute to the warming of the Earth by allowing heat from the sun’s rays in and not letting the heat back out. The Earth is very sensitive to temperature changes. Global warming has been attributed as the cause to increases in storm intensity and frequency, extreme wildfires, sea level rise, and droughts.
Despite being a greenhouse gas, sulfur hexafluoride does have some significant upsides. SF6 gas is inert, non-flammable, non-toxic, thermally stable, and has unmatched arc-quenching capabilities. It is more effective at dissipating heat than air, nitrogen, or other dielectrics. Sulfur hexafluoride is an excellent electrical insulator for medium and high voltage circuit breakers. The introduction of SF6 gas circuit breakers provided benefits such as drastic decrease in fire hazards compared to oil circuit breakers and a much lower footprint.
The electrical industry, the primary user of SF6, is responsible for an estimated 80% of SF6 gas emissions. Thanks to education and training, SF6 emissions have been decreasing since 1990s. The electrical industry is also exploring alternatives to SF6 gas insulated equipment to help reduce emissions further.
At DILO, we believe in the BOTH/AND solution. We both support the research and development of alternative insulating fluids AND provide emission-free SF6 gas handling equipment, training, and services to help prevent SF6 emissions.
